Ryzen 9 7950X
AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X is powered by 16 cores / 32 threads based on the new Zen4 architecture. This CPU ships with an out-of-the-box base frequency of 4.9GHz which can go as high as 5.7GHz. The TDP is rated at 170W, however, the max PPT can go as high as 230W for additional compute juice.
The OC Records
AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X sits at 6.5GHz across all 16 cores which is simply insane. At a core voltage of 1.465V and possibly LN2 cooling, this monstrosity boasts Intel-like OC numbers. As shown in the image below, this frequency is not across 1 core but across all 16 performance cores featured on the 7950X. The Ryzen 9 7950X crosses the 7.0GHz+ barrier across a single core. This is an achievement for even many Intel CPUs. AMD really outdid themselves with the overclocking potential. Aside from that, we do not have much information regarding the thermals or the motherboard used. But these numbers speak for themselves. AMD is done playing around this time.
Intel’s Offerings
Intel’s i9-13900K can also reach 6.0GHz+ without the need of liquid cooling as shown by a few early tests. On retail, we expect even better performance from team blue. It will be interesting to see which CPU comes out on top this time. AMD is venturing into unfamiliar territory so they may face a few thermal bottlenecks as shown by early testing.
