AMD’s flagship chip, the Navi 31, will reportedly feature a GCD (Graphics Complex Die) size of roughly 350mm² which is 30% decrease if compared with the Navi 21’s GCD size of around 520mm². Despite not using the actual MCM (multi chip module) design requiring several GCDs, AMD’s new GPUs will feature multiple MCDs (Memory Complex Dies) as shown below. The Navi 31, from AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture will ship with 1 GCD and 6 surrounding MCDs. This new design will be used in Navi 31 as well as Navi 32, whereas the Navi 33 (Used in SKUs such as the RX 7600 XT) will follow the monolithic design (One complete GCD). With the actual GCD measuring 350mm² and the 6 MCDs at about 40mm², the full die size should be around 600mm² which is on par with NVIDIA’s AD 102 GPU. According to 3DCenter.org , The Navi 21 chip without the Infinity Cache and Memory Controllers, present on the MCDs would have a size of around 375mm² which still happens to be larger than Navi 31 (350mm²). Kepler explains that the actual reason for a reduced die size is that much of the architectural bloat namely, the XGMI , the GDS, Legacy Scan converter, Legacy Geometry pipeline etc has been removed leading to a massive reduction in the GCD size.
