Phil Spencer didn’t think Microsoft Flight Simulator would run in real time the first time he saw it, he told Jorg Neumann, head of the Asobo Studio development team, who worked on this ambitious project. When Neumann showed Microsoft Flight Simulator to Spencer, the two of them immediately saw the game’s potential thanks to the recent upgrade celebrating the franchise’s 40th anniversary. However, the reaction from Spencer wasn’t something anyone was expecting. When asked about Spencer’s reaction, Neumann told VGC, “none of the guys in that room were simmered, and they all felt something.” Phil’s reaction reveals a lot about Microsoft’s progress; with the proper team, the company may be on track to produce some of the industry’s finest games. This year, Microsoft’s lack of intent was evident, and The Game Awards reflected that reality by nominating only one Microsoft-published title.
